Herm and Myrna Alswanger and Ron Parente established Long Ridge Camp in 1962. All three had extensive backgrounds in camping and became the very best of friends. Herm was a senior member of the old JCC Camp and Ron was an assistant director of the Darien YMCA. Myrna had many years experience at a sleep-away camp. They all had maintained a strong desire to start their own camp.
They selected the current site at The Long Ridge School and throughout a long and successful relationship with the School have an agreement that provides use of the grounds for the Camp each summer.
The Camp grew from a handful of children to the institution that it is today. Many generations of children have now come through the Camp. Many of our campers become counselors. We now have many second generation campers (and have started to see our third generation campers) as part of our Camp family!
In 2000, Ron passed away suddenly. While we deeply miss his physical presence each camp day, he is most surely with us in spirit. In conjunction with The Long Ridge School, the front ball field was named The Ronald Parente Field. We feel honored that Ron can be remembered in that way.
Geoff Alswanger, Herm and Myrna's son, who grew up in the Camp as a camper and counselor/swim specialist, re-joined the Camp full time in the summer of 2007.
As we look to the future, the next generation of family will come to take on the honor and responsibility of running Long Ridge Camp.
